Formal Vs. Informal: the Differences in Between Sorority Recruitment

Becoming a sorority woman throughout my junior year in college was something that I could’ve never ever thought of for employment myself. I participated August 2024; going through the informal procedure in order to get my precious quote. Last month, I got to experience formal recruitment for the really first time. I thought I would discuss today the differences between the two recruitments and employment my recommendations on sorority life.

What is Formal Recruitment?

Formal recruitment is a process that includes multiple days of rounds to get “matched” with the ideal house. Each round may become harder due to being dropped by certain sororities. When you think about formal recruitment, consider Bama Rush. The OOTDs, the hundreds of screaming girls opening the yellow envelopes, and the extravagant sorority house filled with appeal on the inside and out.

Although Virginia Tech’s sorority recruitment is not as extensive as Bama Rush, it does follow a lot of the very same procedures. There are 4 rounds within rush: Open House, Philanthropy, Sisterhood and Preference. After each round, your house choices end up being narrower, leading to the last day: Bid Day. Bid Day is where you get a welcome to the sorority you are matched with.

Being a recruiter, employment this experience was quite cool to see. I enjoyed seeing all the PNMs personalizations of their attire and seeing if they would fit well within my sorority. The procedure also helped me gain closer friendships within my own sorority, employment as we had to work together to make sure rush went as efficiently as possible.

What is Informal Recruitment?

Informal recruitment is a procedure that’s much calmer than official recruitment. Usually, it is a COB procedure (constant open bidding), indicating the sorority will PNMs with bids throughout the timespan of the recruitment.

The process typically includes a little sorority occasion where you satisfy some of the siblings and then you may satisfy a sister one-on-one.

The cool thing about informal recruitment is that you can choose your house you want and not be required to see the other houses. But the only thing that might occur is the particular sorority you want might not offer casual. This depends on the sorority’s numbers. If they have adequate numbers and/or simply do not desire to do informal recruitment, you may not be able to hurry that specific sorority. Also, some sororities do invite-only casual recruitment. It is very important to note that informal is an excellent alternative, however it may not be used all of the time.

Which recruitment is much better for me?

Well, it depends. If you want the possibility to see all of your houses on your university campus, it is best to do formal. Formal provides you the opportunity to see all of the homes and find out more about the sis and the history of the sororities.

If you are already set on what house you want, informal recruitment might be the finest alternative. But again, employment you must be careful that some sororities might not offer this option.

How do I understand if I wish to be in a sorority?

TRY IT! See if you like it. I didn’t understand if I would like to remain in a sorority and I was so frightened to attempt it. Once I found my sorority, I felt that I discovered my home away from home. I felt convenience from the females I was surrounded by, and I feel so much love every time I walk in the home doors.
